Clinton, Iowa, September 27, 2012 – LyondellBasell employees in Clinton have achieved two substantial safety milestones, one million safe working hours and one year without a recordable Injury. With approximately 400 workers on site, these two continuing safety achievements are significant when a simple missed step, a dropped tool, or an unbalanced reach could cause what the company and its employees classify as an injury.
“Our commitment to Goal Zero, the company’s safety program for zero injuries and zero incidents, is exemplified by the achievement of one million safe working hours,” said Brian Angwin, Clinton Site Manager. “Everyone at our Clinton site makes safety a personal commitment, both for themselves and their coworkers. But it’s not about the numbers, it’s about going home to your family in the same condition you came to work. LyondellBasell has a focus on safety that is a testament to the great work and attention to detail employees practice every day.”
The Clinton Complex is one of the largest petrochemical facilities in Iowa. Using natural gas liquids as a feedstock, the plant manufactures ethylene, the world’s most widely-used petrochemical, which is then converted into polyethylene resins. These resins provide value to our society by serving as building blocks for products such as leak-proof and shatterproof containers for industrial and household chemicals, packaging that protects our food from spoilage and contamination, and children’s toys that are safe and durable.
The employees’ safety commitment also goes beyond the recent milestones as the complex holds the prestigious STAR status for its attention to safety. STAR sites are those recognized by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s Voluntary Protection Programs for outstanding workplace safety performance and processes.
